Artifacts throughout American history

By Linde, Barbara M

Publishing Date: [2020]

Classification: JNF

Call Number: J973 LIN

Gr 4–7—Essays about what primary sources are and how they can be interpreted by current and future generations bookend content about specific types of primary sources. Using about two pages of text per piece and incorporating relevant images, the series' authors highlight different primary sources, be they photographs, objects, or diaries, and provide good historical context for each. Connections and comparisons are also made with contemporary photographs. Native American tribes aren't consistently identified when they are referenced, and some of the subjects are duplicated across titles. While no source notes are provided, the authors do list photo credits and suggest further reading and relevant and reputable websites. Critical-thinking questions are also interspersed throughout. VERDICT The few misses aside, this series does well engaging readers with primary sources from U.S. history. Copyright 2019 School Library Journal. School Library Journal Reviews

Classification: JNF

Call Number: J973.3 MAR

"John Hancock and Samuel Adams were an unlikely pair of troublemakers. Hancock was young and dashing. Adams was old and stodgy. When the British army began marching toward Lexington and Concord, sending Hancock and Adams fleeing into the woods, the two men couldn't help but worry--this time, had they gone too far? Rich with historical detail and primary sources, this spirited tale takes readers through ten years of taxes and tea-tossing, tyranny and town hall meetings.
