Thrive: the third metric to redefining success and creating a life of well-being, wisdom, and wonder By Huffington, Arianna Stassinopoulos Publishing Date: [2014] Classification: 600 Call Number: 650.1 HUF Our relentless pursuit of the two traditional metrics of success--money and power--has led to an epidemic of burnout and stress-related illnesses, and an erosion in the quality of our relationships, family life, and, ironically, our careers. In a commencement address Arianna Huffington gave at Smith College in the spring of 2013, she likened our drive for money and power to two legs of a three-legged stool. They may hold us up temporarily, but sooner or later we're going to topple over. We need a third leg--a third metric for defining success--to truly thrive. That third metric, she writes in "Thrive," includes our well-being, our ability to draw on our intuition and inner wisdom, our sense of wonder, and our capacity for compassion and giving. Drawing on the latest groundbreaking research and scientific findings in the fields of psychology, sports, sleep, and physiology that show the profound and transformative effects of meditation, mindfulness, unplugging, and giving, Arianna shows us the way to a revolution in our culture, our thinking, our workplace, and our lives. |

Mabel Dodge Luhan & company: American moderns and the West Publishing Date: [2016] Classification: 700 Call Number: 700.4112 Prepared to accompany an exhibition by the same title, mounted by the Harwood Museum of Art at the Univ. of New Mexico, this handsome volume examines Luhan's efforts to promote, shape, and popularize Taos and northern New Mexico—its landscapes and Hispano and Native American cultures—as a transformational center for modernism in the arts and national culture. Concise, comprehensive, and engagingly analytical, the volume introduces readers to Luhan and the many artists, across a broad range of human expression, drawn to Taos. Luhan supported these artists, and their visionary interpretations, by providing room and board at Los Gallos, her 12-acre artist's compound in Taos. The excellent essays consider Luhan's influence, her commitment to women artists, her seminal role in the history (artistic, philosophical, cultural) of US thought in the first half of the 20th century, and the tension between Anglo patronage of traditional Hispano folk art, with its passion for the work of the santeros and their retablos and bultos, and the culture that produced it. The many color and black-and-white illustrations reveal how varied were the forms of expression produced by those who accepted Luhan's invitation to make their way to Taos. The detailed bibliography enhances the value of this book. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates; professionals; general readers.--Copyright 2016 American Library Association. |

Mary Cassatt: painter of modern women By Pollock, Griselda Publishing Date: 2006 Classification: 700 Call Number: 759.13 POL This radically new study redefines the American artist Mary Cassatt's status in the Parisian avant-garde and in American art, placing her work in the wider context of nineteenth-century feminism and art theory. Cassatt's art brought a New Woman's perspective to familiar spaces: the theater, the drawing-room and garden, the studio. Admired by Degas - who invited her to show with the Impressionists in 1877 - Cassatt's work reveals her profound study of Old Masters and keen responses to contemporary French and Spanish painters. Griselda Pollock puts a fresh emphasis on Cassatt's interest in Manet and her influence on American collections of French modernism. She argues that Cassatt's experimentation with etching and pastel from the late 1880s enabled her to represent children and women without sentimentality but with a deepening awareness of a complex psychological charge.--Publisher's description. |
