Leon Garfield's Shakespeare stories By Garfield, Leon Publishing Date: [2015] Classification: JNF Call Number: J822.33 GAR "How to introduce kids to Shakespeare--not just to the stories behind the plays but to the richness of his language and the depth of his characters. That's the challenge that Leon Garfield, a wonderful children's book writer, undertook to meet in his monumental and delightful Shakespeare Stories. Here are twenty-one of the Bard's plays, presented in what is not a series of dry retellings, but rather a refashioning of the dramas as stories, in a way that remains true to the essential spirit of the original versions. Garfield has captured all the richness of character, plot, mood, and setting in Shakespeare's works without resorting to simplification. Indeed, he deliberately retains much of Shakespeare's language, skillfully weaving it into his own prose so that the reader is introduced to the flavor of the verse, as well as to the incidents of plot and the spectacle of the drama. Leon Garfield's Shakespeare Stories is an essential distillation--a celebration and a reminder of Shakespeare's genius as a poet and dramatist"-- |

1789: twelve authors explore a year of rebellion, revolution, and change Publishing Date: 2020 Classification: JNF Call Number: J909.7 ""The Rights of Man." What does that mean? In 1789 that question rippled all around the world. Do all men have rights--not just nobles and kings? What then of enslaved people, women, the original inhabitants of the Americas? In the new United States a bill of rights was passed, while in France the nation tumbled toward revolution. In the Caribbean preachers brought word of equality, while in the South Pacific sailors mutinied. New knowledge was exploding, with mathematicians and scientists rewriting the history of the planet and the digits of pi. Lauded anthology editors Marc Aronson and Susan Campbell Bartoletti, along with ten award-winning nonfiction authors, explore a tumultuous year when rights and freedoms collided with enslavement and domination, and the future of humanity seemed to be at stake. Some events and actors are familiar: Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, Marie Antoinette and the Marquis de Lafayette. Others may be less so: the eloquent former slave Olaudah Equiano, the Seneca memoirist Mary Jemison, the fishwives of Paris, the mathematician Jurij Vega, and the painter ©lisabeth Vig©♭e Le Brun. But every chapter brings fresh perspectives on the debates of the time, inviting readers to experience the passions of the past and ask new questions of today" --Amazon. |

Even More Fantastic Failures once again show's students that their mistakes and failures do not define their whole lives but help them grow into their potential. Kids will read about a host of inspiring, courageous, and diverse people who have accomplished--or still are accomplishing--big things to make this world a better place. By Harding, Thomas Publishing Date: c2020 Classification: JNF Call Number: J943.08 HAR "On the outskirts of Berlin, Germany, a wooden cottage stands on the shore of a lake. Over the course of a hundred years, this little house played host to a kind Jewish doctor and his family, a successful Nazi composer, wartime refugees, and a secret-police informant. During that time, as a world war came and went and the Berlin Wall arose just a stones throw from the back door, the house filled up with myriad everyday moments. And when that time was over, and the dwelling was empty and derelict, the great-grandson of the man who built the house felt compelled to bring it back to life and listen to the story it had to tell. Illuminated by Britta Teckentrups magnificent illustrations, Thomas Hardings narration reads like a haunting fairy talea lyrical picture-book rendering of the story he first shared in an acclaimed personal history for adult readers."-- |

Starting in 2008, when Will was introduced to the canine program, he and Cairo worked side by side, depending on each other for survival on hundreds of critical operations in the war on terrorism. Then, in 2011, the call came: Pick up your dog and get back to Virginia. Now. Cairo and Will trained for weeks for a secret mission, but it soon became clear that this was no ordinary operation. Cairo was among the first members of the U.S. military on the ground in Pakistan as part of Operation Neptune Spear, which resulted in the successful elimination of bin Laden. As Cairo settled into a role as a reliable ́spare dog,́ Will went back to his job́until a grenade blast in 2013 left him severely injured.
