AUGUST 17, 2020, INDEPENDENCE - By unanimous vote during its closed session Tuesday, the Inyo County Board of Supervisors appointed Nathan (Nate) Greenberg the next County Administrative Officer. Greenberg will be replacing Leslie Chapman, who is set to retire September 28.

Greenberg’s official start day will be September 2, providing the opportunity for predecessor and successor to work side by side as they facilitate a smooth transition.

The appointment comes on the heels of a comprehensive nationwide search for County Administrative Officer candidates. After a thorough, multi-interview process, Greenberg was selected as the best fit for Inyo County and its 473 employees and the communities they serve. Greenberg brings with him 18 years of government experience from neighboring Mono County, where he served as the Director of the Information Technology Department. Prior to taking the director position in Mono County, he served in several other county government positions, owned a small business, and worked as an instructor in the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). 

Greenberg is familiar in the Eastern Sierra for his participation in various regional civic organizations. He took a lead role in the Inyo-Mono Broadband Consortium and also helped found the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center; Greenberg currently serves as president of ESAC’s board. He has written several books on backcountry skiing and road biking in the Sierra Nevada, and has earned statewide and national accolades for his work in digital technology.

As a lifetime outdoor enthusiast and avid backcountry skier, climber, and mountain biker, Greenberg has spent countless days wandering and getting to know the extensiveness of Inyo County. As a longtime public servant, he is also keenly aware of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Inyo County.

“Inyo County has always had a special place in my heart, and I am extremely excited to serve as part of an already strong and capable team,” Greenberg said. “While the challenges California counties face today are immense and complex, I feel confident in our ability to advance initiatives through collaborative efforts, thoughtful conversations, and strong relationships. I hope that my years of county experience matched with a fresh perspective will provide for new opportunities to support the communities and constituents of this unique portion of the state.”

The Board of Supervisors reflected Tuesday on the fortunate position Inyo County finds itself in, having successfully recruited a supremely qualified candidate at a time when CAO positions around the state are vacant. They also noted it will be a major benefit to bring Greenberg on in time for him to work with outgoing CAO Chapman, who Supervisor Jeff Griffiths credited with nurturing a stable, successful operation that would be attractive to like-minded CAO candidates.
