The Recyclescope was designed by Judyth Greenburgh, a kaleidoscope artist from Darwin, and constructed in collaboration with artists David Tidewell of Bishop and Jael Hoffman of Olancha. Made out of re-purposed objects, Gladys consists of six different kaleidoscopes through which one can view an array of recyclable materials on a rotating platform. The different-colored glass and plastic bottles, cans, and other items create ever-changing kaleidoscope images as users turn a wheel to rotate the platform. Users are able to sort and select their own recyclables for viewing, and each kaleidoscope offers a different view, making for an infinite number of images to enjoy.
Gladys was unveiled during the April 17, 2018 Board of Supervisors meeting and then introduced to a larger audience at Sunrise Rotary’s Earth Day Sierra event on April 21, receiving rave reviews from those who got the opportunity to try out the giant kaleidoscope – from children and adults alike. It is hoped that Gladys will continue to capture the imagination and serve as a fun and literal example of the good that can happen when recycled materials are kept out of our landfills, so the more exposure she gets, the better.
