Be Proactive About Fire Safety: Green Waste Event This Weekend

Inyo County homeowners are urged to take advantage of the free green waste disposal being offered this weekend and use the opportunity to prepare against the threat of wildfire by clearing property of problematic vegetation and creating defensible space.

Gate fees at Inyo County Landfills will be waived for those bringing in green waste only (no mixed loads) on the following schedule:
•    Bishop Landfill – 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 15 and Sunday, July 16
•    Big Pine Transfer Station – 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 15
•    Independence Landfill – 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 16
•    Lone Pine Landfill – 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 15 and Sunday, July 16

This offer is applicable to Inyo County residents only (be prepared to show I.D.) and is not extended to commercial haulers, landscapers, or contractors.

According to CalFire, defensible space is the first line of defense for your home against wildfire. Adequate defensible space acts as a barrier to slow or halt the progress of fire that would otherwise engulf your property. It also helps ensure the safety of firefighters defending your home.

The County of Inyo continues to encourage residents to be proactive in reducing wildfire risk. Waiving the gate fees at the landfill and transfer stations is an action that demonstrates the County’s commitment towards helping to reduce catastrophic wildfire events within and around our communities.
